I have grown in various ways this year, especially in art. In the beginning of the year, I was unsure about my work and I hesitated to do what came first came to mind - I had elaborate plans that often would not work out the way I wanted them to. Now, I feel more confident when I take risks and begin a project without as much planning. This year, I have learned about the different marks that can be used in figure drawing, the various components of abstract expressionism, and the long, arduous process of oil painting. These new skills have helped me develop as an artist.
During the old masters drawing, I realized that I preferred broad strokes rather than the small detailed marks I preferred in middle school. As I practiced more, I became more confident in my work, and I was able to take more risks in my work without worrying about the final project. This development is especially evident in my figure drawings, where I went from small, geometric shapes in the center of the page to sprawling organic forms that extended off the page. As I used oil pastels more than pencils, I have also learned how to incorporate color to my advantage.
However, I definitely need to improve on my figure drawings, as I still sketch a detailed outline of the figure before I go in with more loose strokes. If I can learn to use bursts of color and bold lines initially while also keeping perspective of the proportion and values of the figure, my work will definitely improve. The skills that I learned this year will be useful in the years to come, when I plan and execute my own projects. I have learned to take more risks and to deviate from my initial plan, which will help me further assess my own strengths and weaknesses. The techniques that I have been exposed to as well as my knowledge of what I can and cannot do well will be imperative next year.
