This term, we went to see Steve Hedburg's exhibit at the Glave Kocen Gallery here in Richmond during one of our walking field trips. He alternates between photorealistic and abstract works, sometimes missing the two, so his exhibit was varied. This calumniation of painting was called "Full Circle", in which he experimented with shapes, lines, and textures to create beautiful and familiar landscapes. Hedburg works to find a balance between abstraction and realism, and he ends up somewhere in the satisfying and fulfilling.
I want to emulate Hedburg in his use of bold colors and geometric shapes in his organic, more fluid paintings. This creates a juxtaposition that helps the audience appreciate his technique even more. I would like to experiment with different sizes of canvases, like he did, and with different colors rather than sticking to my uniform two or three contrasting colors. In the future, I want to visit more of his exhibits along with works that are similar in their use of color, line, and shape, three elements that I work with in my own pieces.
