Face value is the "superficial appearance or implication of something”. Generally, we think of superficial things as unsophisticated and primitive. I propose a new definition: the acknowledgment of an idea or object for what it actually is. We need to stop trying to give meaning to everything, and if that means we cannot comprehend something, so be it.
I work in the abstract, so these pieces are meant to evoke a feeling rather than to resemble an object or figure. I believe that in today's world, we worry too much about understanding what we see rather than simply acknowledging its existence. That is normal, but it is also very limiting.
It is damaging to our own perceptions and ideas to force ourselves to unravel a piece of art the way that the artist intended it to be understood or the way that those around us interpret it. When we try to understand a new concept, we relate it to what we already know. And when you come across a piece of abstract work, you may find yourself at a loss. That’s okay.
Sometimes, there are things that you cannot understand, but that's just how the world works. We need to learn to take things at face-value.
